VILLAGE HALL QUIZ: The first match of the season was held at Picklescott and the Radbrook team took part with only two team members as they were unable to make up a full team of four. However, the team of two – David Barrow and Marion Howarth – managed a creditable fourth place. Last year, Radbrook’s team came top of the second division quiz league and were duly promoted to play in the first division. FLU CLINICS: will be held at Radbrook Green Surgery from 8.30 – 11.30 a.m. on Saturday, October 25. Clinics will also be held from 2 – 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, November 6. Flu clinics are for patients over 65 and those who are classed as ‘vulnerable’. NEW MOBILE PHONE MAST ON BANK FARM ROAD: Vodafone has now put in plans to erect a 10 m mobile phone mast on Bank Farm Road, just by the new puffin crossing. Objectors should write to the Planning Department, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, Guildhall, Frankwell quoting 08/1071/MAS and send a copy to Mono Consultants Ltd., 96-98 King Street, London W6 OQW. CLOSURE OF PAPER SHOP: The Fields Newsagents on Radbrook Green served its last papers and magazines to the public on Tuesday. The newsagent’s shop was the hub of the community and has provided a first-class service to residents for the past 21 years. In future, if you want to buy your newspaper at the Shopping Centre you can do so at the Co-op store, which will be opening its doors at 7 a.m. Monday to Saturday. However, the Co-op’s trading hours on Sunday are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so if you want to buy your paper before 10 a.m. on Sunday you will need to go elsewhere. NEW ROAD CROSSING: A new crossing is being installed on Longden Road near the junction of Bank Farm Road. Temporary traffic lights are now operating on weekdays as there is a one-way traffic system for a short distance outside Meole Brace School as work progresses. The new crossing should be finished in a few weeks and be fully operational well before the children return to school making it safer for all, especially the young people who attend Meole Brace School. NEWSAGENTS SHOP TO CLOSE: It has recently been reported in the local press that we are to lose our much loved and very well used newsagent shop at Radbrook Green, as the Co-op will not be renewing the newsagent’s lease. The paper shop opens 7 days a week at 6 a.m. and many customers call in on their way to work. The excellent service provided by the Fields Newsagents for the past 21 years will be sadly missed by Radbrook residents. BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICE: The service continues to operate once a month at the Community Centre. Due to extremely high numbers of people donating blood at the last two sessions, they over-ran their time causing delays to evening classes taking place that same evening. In order to overcome this problem, the National Blood Transfusion Service has brought the times of their sessions forward. They will now be visiting the Community Centre from 9.45 a.m. to 12 noon and 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30 and Wednesday, August 20. BANK FARM ROAD: Mono consultants Ltd are in the process of consultations to find a suitable location for a 10 metre Vodafone mast and base station within the Radbrook area prior to applying for planning permission. The latest proposal is that the mast be sited on the verge of Bank Farm Road between the pedestrian crossing and the steps leading to the shoppers’ car park. Local councillors have formally objected to the proposal and residents are urged to write letters of objection to Mono Consultants Ltd, 96-98 King Street, London W6 0QW. [25 July 2008]

DOGS ON LEADS: On 28 December 2007 the Borough Council introduced a new order regarding keeping dogs on leads. It is now an offence to let your dog run loose on certain open space areas maintained or managed by SABC, including Mousecroft Pool, Radbrook Recreation Ground and Radbrook Pool. [12 May 2008]

SPEEDING ALONG BANK FARM ROAD: Although certain traffic calming measures have been introduced along Bank Farm Road, including a pedestrian crossing, some motorists still continue to speed through the estate. A reminder that the speed limit is 30 mph maximum and not 30 mph minimum. [14 Apr. 2008]

RADBROOK SURGERY: The surgery is open Monday to Friday from 8.15 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. Telephone calls are not taken during the lunch hour, so call in to make an appointment or collect a prescription. Always allow 48 hours notice when ordering repeat prescriptions. The surgery receives blood, urine test and x-ray results electronically each day at 2 p.m. — please ring after 2 p.m. for results. Although, at times, there maybe difficulty in getting through on the telephone, staff are working hard to improve answering times, and they're always happy to receive your comments, suggestions or feedback. FLOWER ARRANGING AND TALK: Over 90 people gathered at the Radbrook Community Centre on Friday, 2 November to watch Anne Lakelin create six beautiful flower arrangements using fruit, flowers, candles and foliage. These were raffled off during the interval and six lucky prize winners left the building at the end of the evening proudly carrying one of Anne’s arrangements. For the second half of the evening, David Trumper held the audience’s attention with his slide show and talk about Shrewsbury’s past. It was fascinating to see pictures dating back to the early part of the 20th century and to hear David’s comments on the people and incidents at that time. £440 was raised on the evening for Bosom Buddies, a local breast cancer charity. THE RADBROOK FORUM: Starting on Wednesday, 14 November from 10.45 a.m. to 12.15 p.m., the Forum comprises talks by various speakers and slides on a variety of topics. PROMS EVENING: A good time was had by all at the Radbrook Centre on Friday, 12 October, as over 70 people were entertained by the Shrewsbury Light Orchestra, led by Anne Price and conducted by Peter Road-Night. The orchestra was joined by soloist Jessica Johnson, who sang Mozart’s Voi Che Sapete and whose beautiful voice led the singing in the second half of the programme. The evening ended with raised voices, foot stamping and lots of flag waving. Over £400 was raised on the night for the Red Cross ResponD appeal. [17 Oct. 2007]
FORTNIGHTLY REFUSE COLLECTIONS: Residents of Radbrook have now received a green wheelie bin and two new boxes to be used in the new recycling collection services. The new system starts on Tuesday, 23 October. The grey refuse bin will be emptied on Tuesday, 23 October, and every fortnight thereafter. The following week, on Tuesday, 30 October, garden waste and cardboard (in your new green bin) and cans, bottles and newspapers (in your blue and green boxes) will be collected. These recyclables will then be collected every two weeks. Don’t forget to rinse cans and bottles and remove caps, lids or corks. Until you get used to the new system, keep the timetable and guide of what goes where in a handy place in your home. It’s also a good idea to number your bins and boxes to identify them with your property. You can now take your empty plastic bottles and tetra pack cartons to the recycling bins in the Co-op’s car park. [17 Oct. 2007]
MATERIAL AND WOOL: Do you have any spare material or wool to give to Kay Bennington, who makes cushions, aprons, mats and many other items to raise money for various charities? Kay has raised about £2,400, which has been shared amongst various charities, including Cancer Research, Hope House and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. RADBROOK HOUSE: The new 1- and 2-bedroom apartments at the top of Stanhill Road near to the Nursing Home are almost complete. The show home is open from 10 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday to Sunday. The apartments are for sale and aimed at people aged 65 and over and those in need of personal care. So far there has been quite a lot of interest in these apartments and some have already been reserved. [9 Oct. 2007]

QUIZ NIGHTS: The Village Halls’ Quiz League starts again on Friday, 12 October. Last year, Radbrook’s Team won a shield and medals for coming top of division 2 and they now go up to the first division. The quizzes take place once a month at different venues within Shropshire, leading up to the grand final on 29 March 2008. NEW RECYCLING BINS AT SHOPPING CENTRE: Two large bins have been placed near the other recycling containers on the Radbrook Shopping Centre car park. One is for plastic bottles, e.g., milk, washing detergents, fizzy drink bottles. The other container is for empty cartons of fruit juice and other such packs. [26 Sep. 2007]
RADBROOK GREEN SURGERY: On the first Friday of each month from 9.30 – 11.30 a.m., the Friends of the Surgery sell cakes from a stall in the surgery. All proceeds of the sale go to the Friends of the Surgery, the fundraising group for the surgery. The next cake sale will be held on Friday, 5 October. [26 Sep. 2007]
FLU CLINICS: Flu vaccinations are available to patients of Radbrook Surgery on 6 October and 20 October from 8.30 a.m. to 12 noon. Patients whose last name begins with A through M will be seen on the first date, those with N through Z on the second date. DENTISTS’ BIKE RIDE: Stuart Main, Richard Gatenby, Bruce Grainger and Karen Boswana have cycled 30 miles covering the Shropshire leg of a John O’Groats to Land’s End Bike Ride. Five cyclists did the entire journey and were joined at times by dental workers in different parts of the country at various stages of their ride. Bruce is based at the Radbrook branch of Hollings and Partners. Stuart and Richard practice at Town Walls where Karen works as a dental nurse. The Shropshire dentists raised over £1,000 for Dentaid a charity supporting oral health programmes in parts of the world where there is little or no access to trained dental services. The aim is to raise £1 million for equipment and training in India, Africa, South America and parts of Europe. Congratulations to the cyclists who wish to thank all the people who contributed in helping to change the way the world smiles. [26 Sep. 2007]
PUFFIN CROSSING: The new puffin crossing on Bank Farm Road, near the shopping centre, is fully operational and providing a safe place for pedestrians to cross the road. [17 Sep. 2007]
BANK FARM ROAD: A senior traffic engineer from Shropshire County Council has carried out a detailed assessment regarding a reduction of the speed limit on Bank Farm Road and the introduction of a 20 mph zone. As this would require extensive traffic calming along the full length of the road, it has been decided that the benefits gained are not sufficient, value for money cannot be achieved and, therefore, no further action is proposed. However, the Council are presently installing a puffin crossing and are investigating a number of safety measures on Bank Farm Road. [1 Sep. 2007]
ROADWORKS: Work has started on the puffin crossing at Bank Farm Road near to the shopping centre. As part of these works, resurfacing of the carriageway across the entrance to the shopping centre will also be carried out. CARING FOR CARERS: Paul Firth of Lifestyle Fitness has raised £115 for Shropshire Crossroads, a charity aimed at caring for carers. Paul invited members of the gym to pay £2 and rise to a fitness challenge by extending their aerobic exercises of cycling, stepping, rowing, using the cross trainer and walking on the treadmill. Shropshire Crossroads offers respite for carers by promoting and offering support for carers and people suffering from a wide range of disabilities. ROADWORKS: The pavement is being dug up yet again along Stanhill Road on Radbrook Green. This time the work is to install power cables to the newly built nursing home units at the top of that road. Residents will have to tolerate the noise and disruption for approximately three weeks. [12 Aug. 2007]
CROSSING THE ROAD: Plans are underway to install a puffin crossing on Bank Farm Road near to the shopping centre. There are council notices about this attached to some nearby lamp-posts. If all goes according to plan, the work will be done over the summer holidays. In case you’re wondering what a puffin crossing is, it’s like a pelican crossing but the lights controlling the pedestrians are on the near-side of the road, rather than on the opposite side. The system also utilises sensors which detect the presence of pedestrians waiting to cross and as they cross the road. [4 Aug. 2007]
SCHOOL BBQ: The Summer BBQ at Radbrook Primary School was a great success and a fun time was had by all who attended. Even the sun came out!
A fantastic profit of around £3,000 was made! Some of this money has already been earmarked to buy new books for the school’s library which will benefit all of the school’s pupils. The books will be purchased during the summer holidays for use at the start of the autumn term in September. This has been a great year for the school, with the best SATs results the school has ever had – a fantastic achievement. The sports days were well supported by parents and the children enjoyed various track events, including egg and spoon, sack and skipping races. The school summer holidays started on 20 July and the new autumn term begins on Tuesday, 4 September, with the new finishing time of 3.15 p.m. [22 Jul. 2007]

FUND-RAISING AFTERNOON TEA: On Saturday, 23 June between 2 and 4 p.m., tea and scones will be served at 25 Six Acres, Radbrook Green in order to raise money for Oncology Ward 21 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Acorn group (formally Mind). There will be a raffle and tombola and entrance will be £1 for adults. Children welcome. This is being organized by John, Jen and Pat. Please come along to support these worthwhile causes. BUS SHELTER: Residents will know that the bus shelter outside the Radbrook Shopping Centre was vandalised a long time ago. Glass panels were smashed, replaced with plastic panels which were covered with graffiti and then removed. The shelter has had a roof but no sides to shelter passengers from the winter winds for several months. The Council did a survey and as the bus stop was found to be one of the high-use stops around Shrewsbury it qualified to be upgraded. The good news is that the shelter is to be refurbished within the next 28 days. New panels to be inserted are made up of vandal-resistant screens with fine mesh metal screening. Observant residents may have noticed that a grey post has appeared recently at the side of the bus shelter. This is to become a real-time information display to advise passengers when the next bus is due. This work is scheduled to be carried out before the end of March. [22 Feb. 2007]
